Plant Select® is a cooperative program administered by Denver Botanic Gardens and Colorado State University, along with horticulturists and nurseries throughout the USA Rocky Mountain region and beyond.
Each year Plant Select award winning varieties are chosen that thrive in the sunny, variable conditions of the region’s high mountains and plateaus. For other parts of the world, this translates into plants that thrive on less water and provide gardeners with smart, stunning and successful gardens using fewer resources and with less environmental impact
Panayoti Kelaidis (pictured) is Senior Curator and Director of Outreach at Denver Botanic Gardens. He is an adjunct faculty member of Colorado State University and a lifelong gardener. Perhaps best known for promoting awareness of hardy South African plants, Panayoti has almost singlehandedly introduced the genus Delosperma to general horticulture.
Delosperma, or Ice Plant, is a low growing, long-flowering groundcover. Plant Select varieties include Delosperma cooperi Mesa Verde®, a dwarf, alpine form with salmon-pink-flowers; Delosperma dyeri Red Mountain®, with blazing red blooms and extreme drought tolerance; Delosperma Table Mountain ®, with fuchsia flowers and winter foliage that remains green, often tinged with purple, Delosperma Lavender Ice, its sport, with Iridescent lavender blooms and Delosperma floribundum Starburst®, with orchid-pink blooms.
The coral-pink flowered Diascia Coral Canyon® is by far the toughest performer within this novel genus of everblooming wildflowers, tolerating heat and coping well with a wide range of soil and exposure conditions.
Penstemon Silverton® provides attractive year-round presence with its silvery, evergreen leaves.
These and other genus selections from Plant Select are available in Europe through Must Have Perennials™ licensees.
