Mary Ann Faria and her husband own a small nursery, Limerock Plant Farm, in Rhode Island, USA. Her route to the plant business was less direct than some. Her degree is in animal zoology. She jokes, “I missed my calling by one kingdom.” But she didn’t miss the Limerock series of Coreopsis, and her keen eye for garden-worthy plants also led to another Must Have Perennials™ introduction, Euphorbia ‘Bonfire’.
Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’, the parent of Coreopsis ‘Limerock Passion’ and Coreopsis ‘Limerock Dream’, is a natural cross of unknown parentage found growing amongst paving stones at her nursery. The other two are naturally occurring sports. The three cultivars come in bright hues and have exceptional flowering for months on mounded, self-supporting plants.
Euphorbia ‘Bonfire’ is another variety that has fantastic color. Others in the genus may turn red in autumn, but ‘Bonfire’ stays red all summer long. Breeders like Mary Ann Faria keep horticulture exciting!
