George Weigel is a garden writer, garden designer, garden speaker, and Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturist. He is also, as his balding, plant-killing brother likes to put it, a Certified Gardening Wacko.
In central Pennsylvania, George is best known for his “Over the Garden Fence” columns in The Harrisburg Patriot-News, since 1993. His columns, articles and Q&A blogs are online at the paper’s PennLive website.
He’s also the author of a pair of Pennsylvania-targeted books published by Cool Springs Press. They are “Pennsylvania Getting Started Garden Guide” (2014) and “Month-by-Month Gardening in Pennsylvania” (2015). The Garden Writers Association honored the Patriot-News for having the best Home and Garden section in 2007. They also named George’s column as one of America’s 5 best garden columns in 2008. In 2016, National Garden Clubs Inc. awarded him a 2016 Award of Excellence. This is the highest honor the national network of garden clubs awards to non-club members.
George has spoken at such venues as the Pennsylvania Home Show, Pennsylvania Garden Expo, Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Conference, National Council of State Garden Clubs, Hershey Library and Garden, Harrisburg Area Community College Continuing Education and many local garden clubs and Penn State Master Gardener programs. He is a member of Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Gold Medal Plant Award committee and the Garden Writers Association since 1993. George owns “Garden House Calls”, which provides garden drawings for home-garden do-it yourselfers.
